Tonic Architecture

Tonic has been working from their practice in Bristol across a number of projects in the historical and listed building sector. It was their work for Belmont that originally caught Boardwalk's eye. A sensitive site-wide plan for the estate included a tricky brief of a new-build office block that needed to sit within a Grade II listed historic parks and gardens. 

However, the project that has had our interest more recently is the Cleeve Court Farm refurbishment. This previously agricultural outbuilding has been transformed into the most exceptional residential home. A far cry from its original use, the quality and detail that has gone into its transformation is remarkable.

A responsible approach

As a practice, we are aware both of the need to limit and mitigate the impact of our actions in order to help in the fight against climate breakdown, and the responsibility that we have in ensuring that our designs improve the sustainability of the built environment.

We aim to use natural, local and sustainable materials to create beautiful architecture that enhances its place, our wellbeing and our quality of life

The re-use and retrofitting of existing buildings is, we believe, one of the most responsible things that we as architects can do to reduce our environmental impact, and is also a key element of our approach.

We believe that we should:-

– Leave the environment in a better condition than we found it

– Promote traditional crafts and use historic buildings and techniques as a guide and resource for contemporary solutions

– Use natural, local and sustainable materials to create beautiful architecture that enhances its place, our wellbeing and our quality of life
